.Best Alameda County Pizza Joint with a Wurlitzer

Ye Old Pizza Joynt

The outside of Hayward’s Ye Old Pizza Joynt doesn’t provide a clue about the wonders that await within. Located on a nondescript section of Hesperian, perhaps only the name and flashing pizza sign separate this establishment from the others along the strip. Inside, it’s another story: Dark wood-paneled walls and wooden picnic-table seating provide the backdrop for colorful lights, disco balls, and other ceiling contraptions. A huge Wurlitzer pipe organ and a roomful of pipes blast out the music. The organ came from San Francisco’s Warfield Theater in the ’60s, and it’s put to use five nights a week (Wednesday through Sunday). This too is a great place for kids, but you don’t have to be under twelve to appreciate it. The pizza stands alone, as evidenced by the fact that the restaurant gets plenty of eat-in and take-out orders even on Monday and Tuesday nights.
