The Corporation’s trademark dub beats manage to smother the original sounds on Versions, the second remix collection from the famed WAshington, DC, DJ powerhouse. Whether it is reworkings of Astrud Gilberto, Herb Alpert, or the Doors, Versions blankets soporific dub over extremely diverse elements. Middle Eastern brass and South American strings meet Hindi vocal trills and indigenous stringed instruments in the mix. Spanish-style horns decorate the fluid tones of “Lemon Tree.” Every singer on Versions is exceptional, but each retouch by the Corporation adds up to a record that sounds exactly the same the whole way through.
