Grease Trap: But Will the Waiters Have to Wear Do-rags?

Aged rocker Carlos Santana may just get a vanity restaurant in downtown Walnut Creek. That’s speculation from the San Francisco Chronicle’s “Inside Scoop” column, in news about the celebrity entertainment company Dudum Sports & Entertainment. They’re the guys behind the WC restaurants Bing Crosby’s Restaurant and Piano Lounge and McCovey’s, as well as Joe DiMaggio’s Italian Chophouse in North Beach. The Chron tidbit says DSE picked up the three-outlet Cantina mini-chain one of which is on North Broadway in WC, just south of the main library. Here’s an excerpt:

“One idea is to rename the Walnut Creek venue Maria Maria, after Santana’s 1999 song, and turn it into an upscale restaurant with a nod toward Mexican coastal cuisine. DSE is already working with Santana on a 25,000-30,000-square-foot restaurant and jazz club in Las Vegas . . . Any deal with Santana here would be a test run for Vegas.”

Can you say “Black Magic Woman” chicken skewers?
