Backers of a tobacco tax measure co-sponsored by ex-state Senator Don Perata say they will change it so that it doesn’t take $45 million from kids programs, the Trib reports. The proposed $1 tax on cigarettes had sparked a backlash from early childhood education advocates, who vowed to fight it. Although sponsors of the measure said at first that they had no plans to alter its language and knew full well that it would take millions from kids programs, they changed course, and agreed to rewrite the initiative.
