The San Francisco Chronicle asked BART just how much the fallout from former BART cop Johannes Mehserle cost, and yesterday the agency made the answer public. The $6 million includes a $1.5 million payout to Grant’s daughter, $553,000 in legal fees, $1.4 million in overtime for cops investigating the killing or on riot detail, and $800,000 in additional training. These costs, of course, do not include overtime pay for Oakland cops or any other police agency, nor do they include damages to private businesses during the demonstrations that followed.
