Sure, we could name any of the obvious consumer-oriented student destinations such as Cafe Strada, Kip’s, or Raleigh’s. But we want to be hip with the healthy wave of Crystal Geyser addicts now populating the University of California’s flagship school. Come by the Cal Rec Club at Berkeley’s Recreational Sports Facility at practically any hour of the week, and it’s jammed with students. And why not? After all, it costs only $35 a semester for Cal students to take advantage of its weight room, running machines, pool, or numerous basketball courts. If there’s a drawback to the place, it’s that it’s too crowded, especially during the five to seven o’clock evening hours. Nonetheless, it’s one of the few places around where a pickup basketball game is easy to find and there’s always pleasurable people-ogling if you’re too beat to exercise.
