Best Set and Lighting Design: Theatrical eye candy

Scott Bradley and T.J. Gerckens, Berkeley Rep

It’s a tall order to create lyrical, engaging visuals that honor the wide-ranging interests and vision of the artist and engineer Leonardo da Vinci. Writer and director Mary Zimmerman certainly pulled it off with her acrobatic cast in their jewel-toned costumes, but it would have been impossible without the jaw-dropping set and lighting designed by, respectively, Scott Bradley and T.J. Gerckens. Bradley’s oversize file cabinets, mysterious doors, and surprising touches (one drawer full of grass, another of water) combined to form a sort of magical storybook, expertly illuminated by Gercken’s lighting, which was nearly a character all by itself, drawing attention to this idea or that.
