Two Lone Swordsmen

One of electronic music’s originals, Andrew Weatherall (best known for his unmatched production on Primal Scream’s Screamadelica) returns with his musical partner Keith Tenniswood for the duo’s third album under the Two Lone Swordsmen moniker. On From the Double Gone Chapel, the two have decided to humanize themselves: Weatherall, a man better known for hiding behind turntables, actually sings. The results have more in common with the tolling, doom-laden goth sounds of Bauhaus and Sisters of Mercy than the Swordsmen’s fellow techno and electro producers, but the dark and ominous tone of Double Gone nevertheless hints at a positive undercurrent. On tracks such as “Sex Beat” and “Driving with My Gears in Reverse,” Weatherall busts out with the confidence of Love and Rockets’ Daniel Ash, while Tenniswood offers a marching but melodic bassline that walks the length of Double Gone. This new direction goes a long way toward jelling the Swordsmen’s multitude of influences — from electro to punk to dub — in a far more coherent fashion than a strictly electronic album could ever manage. The segue into this delightfully seedy sound, however, might knock some longstanding fans for a loop.
