Mixing beloved jazz standards with exceedingly hip DJs, the third installment of Verve’s trailblazing series is a revelatory assemblage of dancefloor masterpieces. The Postal Service immediately impresses with its version of Nina Simone’s “Little Blue Girl,” featuring Atari-sounding beats, a shimmery piano, and snippets of Simone’s deep-throated warble. Another indie-rock act, the Album Leaf, takes on an even more powerful Simone song: “Lilac Wine,” adding just the right amount of poppy synth melody and laid-back beats to the spare original. More upbeat is Manchester production group RSL’s zingy swing remix of Anita O’Day taking the Louis Prima classic “Sing, Sing, Sing” over the top, or Shirley Horn’s “Come Dance with Me” revved up by Sugardaddy, which adds electroclash groove and Latin-style percussion. Though synths and straight-up jazz vocal classics may not sound like they’d make beautiful love together, they do on this near-perfect dance party disc.
