.Big Media Gets Big Dis in Oakland

Bay Area residents are being urged to voice their concerns about big media getting bigger to FCC commissioners at a hearing next Friday in Oakland. The hearing, sponsored by Media Alliance, Youth Media Council, and the NAACP, will address the implications of, say, Clear Channel – which owns eleven radio stations in the Bay Area — being able to buy newspapers or TV stations, or MediaNews Group being able to buy radio or TV stations. While it’s not an official FCC hearing, two of the five FCC commissioners are expected to be in attendance, and it’s the only such meeting that will take place in the Bay Area. Yesterday, Media Alliance released the findings of a report by McGannon Communications Research Center on the implications of cross-ownership in California. But strangely, the report excluded the Bay Area.
