That scene in Pulp Fiction wherein Uma Thurman and John Travolta argue the merits of a $5 milkshake seems awfully dated now, in the age of, yes, the $2 cookie. Emeryville’s Teacake Bake Shop doesn’t screw around or ply its wares for cheap, but lo, the absurdly decadent joy of biting into a Coffee Toffee Chocolate. Robustly waffle-sized, the CTC essentially amounts to childhood joy in convenient cookie form, crafted just like mom used to make — with Madagascar Bourbon vanilla, toffee, Callebaut semisweet chocolate, and Illy espresso. (Mom always was a little pretentious.) The Madagascar Bourbon, particularly, is palpable, as is your elation and sweet-tooth satisfaction. Ridiculous. It’s like taking a giant bite out of a Starbucks store some prankster has filled to the ceiling with English toffee. Feel free to also sample the Bake Shop’s various cupcakes and whatnot, though bear in mind it may require a bank loan to regularly patronize a joint that imports its bourbon from Africa.
