The Humane Society of the United States is willing to support either Dems and Republicans, depending on what they’ve done for animals lately. But East Bay GOP Congressman Dick Pombo is on the group’s enemies list for a number of reasons, and the group’s top dog has been out ringing doorbells for Democratic rival Jerry McNerney. As the Wall Street Journal (subscription required) reports today, this animal-loving nonprofit, now with twice the membership of the National Rifle Association, has quietly built itself into a potent single-issue political force that particularly appeals to middle-aged white women.
