This week, “Surviving the Match“: Think doctors have it made? Think again, fellow sufferer. Every year about this time, graduating med students are subjected to the Match, a complex lottery system designed to eliminate favoritism and cheating when it comes to parceling out new doctors to residency programs around the country. It doesn’t exactly achieve those goals, but no one has come up with a better system. What the Match does accomplish is to drive young would-be doctors crazy every March — which is what this week’s cover story so richly illustrates. We also come to appreciate why there are so many dermatologists these days.
