Jeff Denham, the Republican state Senator whose district stretches from Modesto to Salinas, has asked governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to schedule his recall election as early as the June 3 state primary. Denham has historically been a fairly moderate Republican, but he broke sharply to the right last year when he refused to go along with Don Perata’s budget deal, in a move many Democrats suspected was calculated to earn brownies points with California conservative leaders when he runs for a statewide office. But the Don hit back hard, contributing $250,000 to a recall campaign targeting Denham, who now faces a fight to keep his job. Will Perata play this hard when he’s mayor? Sorry, if he’s mayor?
