What to Do About the S-Curve?


A big-rig driver was killed after a truck overturned and plummeted off the Bay Bridge this morning while trying to negotiate the hazardous new S-curve on the upper deck. According to the Chron, it was the 42nd accident — and the first fatality –since CalTrans contractors installed the temporary curve during Labor Day weekend.

The CHP and CalTrans have installed reflectors, new signs, and flashing lights to warn motorists that they have to slow down considerably before reaching the curve, but obviously the warning signs aren’t working. The CHP and CalTrans need to come up with some answers fast before someone else is killed or seriously hurt — because the S-curve is scheduled to remain in place until the new eastern span of the bridge is completed in 2013.
