.Video of the Day: “Death Is This Communion” by High on Fire at the Uptown

In case you missed it, Oakland metal trio High on Fire unveiled a new song (and the title track off its upcoming album), “Death Is This Communion,” at the Uptown last month. Clocking in at more than eight minutes, “Death” shouldn’t disappoint their ardent fanbase, but it may be an indication that Matt Pike is tiring of showing off how fast he can shred. (Yet, can one really get tired of the creepy chorus-of-riffage “Devilution” intro?) Instead, Pike, drummer Des Kensel, and whoever’s on bass duties at the moment opt for a bottom-heavy rumble with plenty of blasted-out bass (or, that could just be the crappy audio), and at a pace Sleep fans would clamber for. Likely, it’s just a temporary break from their speeding off into oblivion. In any case, it’s not the painfully mediocre Kalas. P.S. This video is best for listening purposes.
