UC officials, who have had to deal with several pay scandals in recent years, defend the perks, arguing that high-paid officials deserve the extra money because they’ve taken on more job responsibilities. But rank-and-file university employees correctly note that lower-paid workers throughout the UC system now have extra duties because of the current budget crisis and they’re taking pay cuts – not getting raises.
