.States Nag Craigslist to Kill Escort Ads

Attorneys general for 17 states have signed an open letter calling for Craigslist to shut down its adult services section, claiming that thinly veiled prostitution and escort ads are “rampant” on the site. “”We recognize that Craigslist may lose the considerable revenue generated by the Adult Services ads,” read the letter, according to CNN. “No amount of money, however, can justify the scourge of illegal prostitution, and the suffering of the women and children who will continue to be victimized.” A Craigslist representative claimed that the site was very concerned about sex trafficking. Earlier, Craigslist CEO Jim Buckmaster wrote that as a result of prostitution concerns, each adult ads is now screened by an attorney before it goes live, a claim that we don’t exactly find credible, considering the thousands of ads that are posted to the site each day. As for the AGs, they mostly hailed from Southern or Midwestern states, although Rhode Island and Connecticut signed on as well.
