The topic of abortion, although controversial, especially in our current political climate, can benefit from less antagonistic dialogue. Currently, clinics all around the country are under pressure of closing. In Texas alone, the bill House Bill Two successfully managed to get nearly two-thirds of clinics that provide abortions shuttered. The documentary The Provider follows Dr. Shannon Carr, an abortion provider who travels weekly from New Mexico to Texas to work in one of the last remaining clinics in the state to provide safe procedures to women. Berkeley filmmaker Maya Cueva and Leah Galant both served as directors of the film, and both will be available for a Q-and-A after the screening this Monday. Donations from the showing will benefit the Bay Area Doula Project, an organization that provides doula care to women.
Monday, August 7, 7:30pm, $5-$15 donation, Advancing New Standards in Reproductive Health, 1330 Broadway, Suite 1100, Oakland, TheProviderFilm.com
