.OPD Cop Undermined Bey Investigation

The Chauncey Bailey Project has a fascinating piece out today, in which evidence suggests that Oakland detective William Longmire interfered in two major investigations of the Yusuf Bey crime family. When soldiers from the Bey clan smashed up West Oakland liquor stores in 2005, Longmire contacted the detective handling the case, claimed that bakery leader Yusuf Bey IV’s mother Daulet Bey had called him, and asked if the Bey family had anything to worry about. An apparently irate detective told him not to tell the Bey family anything about the investigation. When Bey family members were suspected of kidnapping and torturing two women, Longmire gave them some sort of advice before they talked to the police, and tried to return computers seized from the bakery before the police could read the files and look for evidence of other crimes. It’s an excellent story, chased for a year, and requisite reading for Oakland citizens.
