.Lewis: Did I Mention I Wrote a Book About the Oakland A’s?

Tired of worshiping at the altar of Moneyball? Seth Mnookin sure is. He marks the inaugural issue of the highbrow bizmag Portfolio by taking aim at Michael Lewis, who wrote a piece proposing a “jock exchange,” in which the public would buy and sell shares in athletes based on their performance. The story, Mnookin wrote, is “is heavy with references to the Oakland A’s. And as is increasingly the case, many of these references are out of date and are used to illustrate points that might have been true four or five years ago, but aren’t any longer.” To wit: the A’s are no longer the most cost-efficient team. That honor goes to the Florida Marlins, who bumped the A’s from the top of the bargain-basement list. Mnookin concludes, “He’d be doing himself a favor if he … stopped writing pieces that use increasingly outdated research to do current articles,” adding, “hopefully I will follow this advice.” Meanwhile, Gawker spreads an anonymous rumor that Lewis’ stipend with Portfolio runs to $100,000. For – are you ready for this? – two articles a year. Nice work if you can get it.
