.Lawyers: Oakland Cop Warrant Scandal Bizarre

Great piece here by the Trib‘s Paul Rosynsky, who interviewed numerous defense attorneys and found that the Oakland police officers who faked evidence to obtain search warrants didn’t even have to do it. The OPD’s Internal Affairs unit is investigating charges that numerous cops affirmed that they bought drugs from suspects in undercover actions, even though the crime lab hadn’t confirmed that the substances were narcotics. But according to the lawyers interviewed by Rosynsky, the judges would have signed search warrants even if the cops had just reported a lot of traffic moving in and out of a house, or known drug users entering or leaving. “If they did it just right, they would be fine,” attorney Deborah Levy told Rosynsky. “I don’t understand it.”
