Since no one really understands what the BP Deepwater Horizon spill will do to the Gulf of Mexico, those pencil-neck geeks at Lawrence Berkeley Lab have stepped up to the plate. Partnering with Massachusetts-based Pressure BioSciences Inc., the lab will collect deep-water samples of Gulf oil and study how microbes perform in such environments. The goal, reports the SF Business Times, is to develop new strategies to break down oil spills with microorganisms, rather than relying on toxic chemical dispersants.
