.Kaiser Permanente Bails on Kidney Transplants

After a series of brutal scandals, officials with Oakland-based Kaiser Permanente have finally surrendered control over the last element of its flawed kidney transplant program. According the Los Angeles Times, which broke the story to the enduring embarrassment of Bay Area reporters who got caught napping, UCSF has taken over the last of Kaiser’s kidney transplant operations, a clinic for patients recovering from surgery.

After jumping into the business in 2004, Kaiser lost patient records and accidentally bumped desperately ill people to the bottom of the waiting list, endangering the lives of hundreds. The administrator of Kaiser’s San Francisco hospital resigned in the wake of the scandal, and Kaiser announced last May that it was getting out of the transplant business entirely. Transfer of the clinic’s operations is the last phase of Kaiser’s humiliating retreat.
