.John Yoo Off the Hook?

In a surprise move, Spain’s leading prosecutor said no charges should be filed against notorious UC Berkeley law professor John Yoo and five other Bush administration lawyers who enabled torture. According to AFP news, Spain’s Attorney General Candido Conde Pumpido said that the CIA agents and military interrogators who actually carried out torture should be targeted – not lawyers like Yoo. Earlier this week, there were several reports, based on anonymous sources, that prosecutors would seek charges against Yoo and the others. Regardless, the attorney general’s recommendation is not binding. Spanish Judge Baltasar Garzon, best known for going after former Chilean Dictator Augusto Pinochet, can still decide to seek an indictment against Yoo and the five other lawyers, who include former Attorney General Alberto Gonzales and ex-Defense Department counsel William Haynes, who now works for Chevron in San Ramon.
