Podcast ponders local music’s fate and more

Along with this week’s feature on the struggles of local music and performance venues, be sure to check out Emeryville’s Center for Investigative Reporting’s latest Reveal podcast, “The Ticket Trap.”

Emmy award-winning senior reporter and producer, Ike Sriskandarajah, covers the concerns and plans of Oakland’s Paramount Theater—his favorite theater in Oakland—which plans to reopen its doors in 2021 after going dark in March 2020 due to the pandemic.

2019 Pulitzer Prize finalist, Byard Duncan, a byline familiar to any regular GQ, Esquire and Columbia Journalism Review readers, offers the feature story about how of some of the largest companies in what’s known as the “secondary ticket market” have created pitfalls that can trap people while buying tickets online. A story to become even more relevant as venues begin to open.

The episode closes with New York Times Student Journalism Institute alumna and 2016–17 Reveal Investigative Fellow, Yoohyun Jung, who’s “been a fan of K-pop music for most of her life. But when she went from being a fan to working in the business, she saw some disturbing things that gave her a new perspective on this international phenomenon.”

Once you’re finished with that, don’t stop there. Reveal runs the gamut of journalistic interest for both the casual observer and the hardcore “policy wonk.” Most noteworthy has been their coverage of white supremacist terrorism, well before the coup attempt on Jan. 6, with articles that are must-reads for anyone who wants to stay abreast of this “secret war” raging across the country today.
Oakland’s East Bay Express appreciates Emeryville’s Center for Investigative Reporting’s deep commitment to collaboration with other newsrooms. As these difficult decisions on how to move forward during these uniquely challenging times must be made, EBX looks forward to more mutually beneficial conversations and collaborations with our local comrades in truth and transparency.
