.Hershey Felder Channels Irving Berlin This Month At Berkeley Rep

If immigrant Irving Berlin, née Israel Isidore Baline, had written any more marches, rags, fox trots, love songs or ballads, Hershey Felder as Irving Berlin would be a song-play longer than a Mahler symphonic cycle. America’s songbook is filled to bursting by the roughly 1,500 works written during Berlin’s 60 years of song creation. Award-winning virtuoso pianist Felder takes on with equal flare the razzle dazzle of “There’s No Business Like Show Business,” the sentimentality of “God Bless America” and “White Christmas,” and the telling of Berlin’s biography. The roughly two-hour, intermission-free show follows Felder’s previous appearances at Berkeley Rep that showcased Gershwin, Bernstein, Chopin, and other masters. An audience sing-along is a given, so get your do-re-mi ready. Even if every tune isn’t your fav, tip your hat to a guy who believed in America’s greatness and celebrated his adopted country with iconic, enduring music.
