.Free Speech, Free Clinic Founders Die

Michael Rossman, who helped lead the Berkeley Free Speech Movement and was a lifelong elementary school science teacher, died in Berkeley on May 12. Memorial Services will be held at Kensington’s Unitarian Universalist Church on June 23. You can read Rossmans rather treacly account of the FSM’s legacy here. In addition, the Trib reports, Berkeley Free Clinic founder Alvin Leonard died on April 20. (Now that’s a belated obituary!) Leonard dedicated his life to public health, nagging people to wear seat belts long before that was cool, tracking the effects of pesticides on farm workers, and of course setting up the free clinic on Durant Avenue. Up until age 90, he jogged miles through the Berkeley hills five days a week.
