A good song can be a simple, catchy melody with lyrics that are easy to remember, with harmonic accompaniment that consists of 3-4 intuitive chords, all held together with a steady 4/4 time signature and a standard form. However, when a musician has acquired a vocabulary of harmonic sophistication, a love of language that expresses complex ideas with originality, and a willingness to play with song forms and interesting melodic choices, the result can move the song beyond the familiar and predictable to compositions that are memorable for their creative beauty and originality. Laura Nyro, Joni Mitchell, Becca Stevens, Esperanza Spalding, Donald Fagen, Paul Simon, Laura Mvula, Gregory Porter, and many others have expanded the concept of songwriting to expressions of personal artistry. This class is about opening up your concept of writing songs, reaching beyond the idea of “hit songs,” and using a full spectrum of creativity in your work.

This class is for students who are already writing songs and have a musical skill set that allows them to expand their craft to a new level of expression. Do you read music and have an understanding of basic music theory? Do you play an instrument, and can you accompany yourself?

The instructor will provide lecture material and an E-work/study book to use in the course.

Prerequisites: knowledge of basic music theory, ability to read music, and play an instrument for self-accompaniment.

Students must consult with the instructor before being admitted into the class. Contact Stephanie Bruce at minorgigue@yahoo.com before registering.

Instructor: Stephanie Bruce

During her long career as a singer and singing teacher, Stephanie Bruce has performed in various styles, including folk, classical, pop, and jazz, which has informed her original compositions. Her music study began with piano lessons in grade school and continued with college classes and private lessons in voice, piano, theory, music history, and composition. However, her most important musical education was acquired sharing the stage with stellar professional musicians who taught and encouraged her. She has been teaching all things vocal for nearly 35 years, including 10 years at the California Jazz Conservatory. She continues teaching a steady flow of private students, many of whom have gone on to professional performance themselves. Stephanie has released 3 CDs of primarily original material and will be going into the studio soon to record a new set of songs in 2021, which she will be sharing on the concert stage.
