.Election 2006: Green Party Candidate Selling Her-Gasp-SUV!

Oakland City Council candidate Aimee Allison, a Green Party member, says it’s true-her family does drive a gas-guzzling Sports Utility Vehicle, specifically a 1999 Land Rover Discovery II. However, the enviro-conscious candidate says she and her hubby have been trying to sell the car. Follow the jump to see why she got the car in the first place and some sales info in case you want to buy the car yourself.

Allison is running against District 2 incumbent Pat Kernighan. On her Web site, Allison promises to promote “green policies” for Oakland: “Urban centers like Oakland must put policies in place that will lower our demand for fossil fuels, decrease pollution, and target green industries.”

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, the 1999 Land Rover gets 13 miles per gallon in the city and 16 on the highway.

“We don’t want to drive an SUV. … That’s not how we roll,” Allison said in an interview after her rally at city hall yesterday.

Later on, Allison explained in an e-mail sent by her campaign spokesman, “My husband got the car from my husband’s sister. We had a young child at the time and couldn’t afford a new car. We don’t want a gas guzzler, and didn’t really want one to begin with. We’ve been trying to sell it for 8 months. Please take it off our hands!”

More car info: 4.0 L V-8 engine, four-wheel drive. Blue Book value is $10,000, but Allison is willing to consider other offers. If you’re serious about helping Allison break her oil habit, call her campaign HQ at 277-0182 or e-mail: [email protected]
