An Oakland City Council committee last night requested a change in Mayor Ron Dellums’ $.7 million plan to boost the number of cops in Oakland, according to the Oakland Tribune. The Public Safety Committee asked the mayor’s staff to lessen the $1.5 million earmarked for attracting recruits with advertising and implement signing bonuses instead. Councilwoman Nancy Nadel has long championed signing bonuses, but last week Police Chief Wayne Tucker told the council that they are not an effective use of taxpayer funds. Dellums’ cops plan, which also calls for operating four police academies this year, is scheduled to come back before the full council next Tuesday.
