Don't slip up -- go (to) BANANAS' thirtieth anniversay

SAT 10/18

Thirty years ago, a couple of moms got together to write a column about free or inexpensive things to do with kids in the East Bay. From there they launched a resource and support center for parents and children. They called it BANANAS, because the name is memorable and friendly, and also because so many of us parents “go bananas” looking for exactly the information that BANANAS provides: How do you deal with colic? Head lice? Discipline problems? Where can you find a babysitter for a Vietnamese-speaking family? If you’ve ever relied on BANANAS’ expertise, or if you’re a new parent looking for help, come celebrate its thirtieth anniversary at Lakeside Park in Oakland on October 18 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Bring a picnic and enjoy a day’s worth of activities for children of all ages: singers and dancers including Bonnie Lockhart, Asheba, Jingle Jamboree Music, and Prescott Clowns, birthday cake, storytellers, sack races, kite-making, and a free book for every child. Bay Treat

The monster mall

Razors in apples and other rumored trick-or-treat horrors have spurred some positive innovations, like organized community festivals. This Saturday, Emeryville hosts a free Harvest Festival, wherein kids can show up in costume and, if they’re among the first 300 li’l ghouls to arrive, receive a bag of treats. On the tricking tip, there will be roving folks in holiday-appropriate disguises, and you can get your photo taken with a monster at one of the many themed arts-and-crafts stations. Much more will take place from noon to 4 p.m. at Bay Street (Powell and Christie streets). 510-655-4002. — Stefanie Kalem

Krazy Kiddie Komix

It’s hard being a kid these days. They need a laugh sometimes. But instead of letting them vegetate in front of the computer or TV tube, bring the young ones out for an evening of live standup comedy, Sho Biz Kids style — with young comedians like Mike Sugarman and David Edmon (both 15). The comedy sets, designed for families with children ages 6-12, take place on consecutive Saturdays, October 18 and 25, 7:30 p.m., at 2363 Boulevard Circle, suite 106, in Walnut Creek (aka the Clean Comedy Club), near Mount Diablo Boulevard and Boulevard Way. The cost for a family of four is a very affordable $25 — and it’s a live, breathing funny person up there, not a mass of pixels.
