Anyone strolling the Fruitvale district of Oakland will undoubtedly bump into a number of vendors pulling boxes of discos compactos on luggage strollers, asking passersby to purchase the latest hits from Spanish-language radio. That’s how Jose and Maria Barajas, owners of Acapulco Records, started their business. They sold CDs on the street or at flea markets whenever they could fit the side-job around their full-time work schedules. Now the record-shop owners have two stores, the original in the Fruitvale district on International Boulevard, and a satellite store at the Bay Fair Mall in San Leandro. At the Fruitvale store, colorful posters hang from the walls and ceiling and a clear bass-driven sound system showcases the DJ-service side of the business. Self-dubbed “La Discoteca Diferente!,” the Barajas’ stores offer a variety of Mexican pop music, from Lupillo Rivera to La Banda del Recodo, Los Tigres del Norte to Selena.
