It’s not exactly surprising, but 500 students assembled in Sproul Plaza on Friday afternoon, to cheer as local mayors denounced Proposition 8, the proposed constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage. The big-ticket item on the bill was San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom, who got the whole ball rolling by deciding to marry gay couples in defiance of state law in 2004.
