The BART board voted to officially raise fares by 6.1 percent across-the-board, and slash weekend and evening service. According to the Chron, the minimum ticket cost also will jump from $1.50 to $1.75, while the surcharge for riding to San Francisco airport will increase from $1.50 to $4.00. On weekends and weeknights, BART trains will only run every twenty minutes, instead of the current fifteen. But the fare hikes and service cuts are not enough to fix BART’s budget mess. The BART board also is seeking cuts to its bloated union contracts, but the unions say BART management needs to trim its own fat salaries and benefits first. From our perspective, both management and the rank-and-file are overpaid, and need to step up to the plate and do what’s right.
